Thingvellir Caving Tour

Iceland Cave Tour

“Greatest Tour in my Iceland Trip”

My friends and I joined the Lava Cave tour, and it turned out to be the most unforgettable experience in our Iceland trip.

Basecamp Iceland lava tube cave tours offer unique blend of physical activity, adventure and jaw-dropping scenery above and below.
"Our best tour of our trip! Our group did both large tour groups and small. Personalized trips are the way to go. We had Eric - most amazing tour guide - who was knowledgeable about the cave and answered our many questions. - Tripadvisor

Gjábakkahellir Lava Tube

Located in Thingvellir National Park, Gjábakki lava tube cave is 9000 year old and 360 meter long lava tube filled with magnificent stalactites, high ceilings and lava falls that look as spellbound. Most importantly Gjabakki cave has no man-made structures or installed lights, making it one of few accessible caves that remain intact and pristine. Use of both hands and feet is needed and some bending over/crouching is required but this tour is otherwise an easy activity suitable for the whole family.
The cave is 364 meter long (1194 feet) and was, according to official documents, discovered during a road construction in 1907. Old folklore stories do however indicate earlier dates of discovery and a different name.

About Our Lava Caving Adventures

Mix of adventure and activity

We love adventures blended with physical activity and challenges and we like you to have the opportunity to experience natural lava tube caves without handrails, wooden pathways or installed lights.

Gaining a different perspective
The physical effort adds a whole new dimension into the experience and a totally different perspective on the lava field that is filled with both local culture and scenery that is impossible to find anywhere else. Our lava tube caving tours are guided by highly qualified guides and you are equipped with top quality caving helmets & headlamps for the best experience.

Leaving nothing behind
The lava tube caves we use for our tours are filled with colorful rocks, stalactites and stalagmites that have been frozen in time from formation and until discovered by the locals. We therefore show our respect and thread lightly, leaving nothing behind and taking nothing but pictures and memories.
Gjábakkahellir former name, Stelpuhellir "Little Girls Cave" gives some clues to it's dark past of a girl that got lost in the cave. Ask your guide about Helga.
