Volcano Adventure Tour
On our tour to Reykjanes UNESCO Geopark, we visit the fields of moss-covered lava that make you feel like you have just arrived to the Moon. We see the steam rising from the geothermal areas all around us with numerous volcanic craters and open fissures and faults that all bear witness to the volcanic activity of the peninsula. No words or pictures will do this place justice. This area is a must that should be experienced first hand.
After pickup in Reykjavik, we drive in the direction of Keflavík Airport but turn off the road to cross the peninsula at Hafnarfjörður. On our way across the, we pass by Krísuvík, the number one volcanic system that has in historic times caused lava floods all the way to the capital area some 15 miles (25 km) away. The route is scenic, to say the least, black sand beaches on the lake ,Kleifarvatn, and steam rising up from the geothermal areas that sit on top of the magma chamber, hidden some 4 miles beneath the surface.
Once on the South side of the peninsula we stop at the nearby cinder cone crater Eldborg for a quick look and then at the seemingly, endless bird cliffs Krísuvíkurbjarg to see the Atlantic Ocean carving out the lava rock coastline of Reykjanes. The cliffs are home to some 60.000 seabirds of different species that come to mate in the summer and you can expect to see guillemots, seagulls and even the colorful puffins if you are lucky. Driving further west, we arrive at the fishing town Grindavík to enjoy the fisherman's favorite soup at Bryggjan for lunch before we make our last stop at Eldvörp, a series of volcanic craters formed only 800 years ago in the last round of eruptions in the area. The mystic lava formations, are stunning, to say the least, and a perfect ending for our short excursion before our drive back to Reykjavik.
